Behind the Scenes: Our Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee Explained
Every roofer claims a great warranty. Almost none of them mean it. Here's exactly what our lifetime guarantee covers — and why we offer it.
When customers see “Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee” on a roofing company’s website, the natural reaction is skepticism. Everybody claims a great warranty. Hardly anyone honors it.
So let’s explain exactly what ours means, what it covers, and why we can offer it without losing sleep.
The two warranties on every roof
Every roof we install comes with two separate warranties:
1. Manufacturer warranty
This covers the materials. If the shingles defect, fade prematurely, or fail for a manufacturer reason, the manufacturer replaces them. Premium architectural shingles typically come with 25–50 year warranties.
This is not from us. It’s from GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, or whichever brand we install. Honest contractors don’t take credit for it — they just install certified materials.
2. Our lifetime craftsmanship guarantee
This is our promise about how the roof was installed. If anything we did wrong causes a problem — a leak from poor flashing, a bad nail, an underlayment seam that shifted — we come back and fix it. Free.
That’s the part most contractors don’t actually offer. They might say “lifetime warranty” but the fine print limits it to the original homeowner, requires annual paid inspections to keep it valid, or excludes the most common failure modes.
What “lifetime” actually means in our case
Our craftsmanship guarantee is:
- For the lifetime of the roof itself, not just one year
- Transferable — if you sell the home, the new owner inherits the guarantee
- No paid inspections required to keep it valid
- No fine print exclusions for normal weather
- Free callbacks for any workmanship issue
If a leak appears 12 years after we installed your roof, and we determine it’s because of how we did the work, we come back and fix it. No invoice. No “well, technically that’s not covered.” No runaround.
Why we can afford to do this
The skeptical question is: “If you really offer this, you must get tons of callback work for free. How is that sustainable?”
The answer is: we get almost no callbacks, because we don’t cut corners during installation.
That sounds like marketing, but it’s just math. Here’s how:
- We use premium synthetic underlayment over the entire roof, not just half of it
- We install ice & water shield at every eave, valley, and penetration
- We replace damaged decking instead of shingling over it
- We use proper step flashing on every chimney and wall transition
- We hand-nail in critical locations and don’t overdrive nails with the gun
- We do thorough cleanup with magnetic rollers
If you do all those things, leaks are extremely rare. And the few that do happen are usually small enough to fix in an hour. Across thousands of roofs over twenty years, we get maybe one warranty callback per month — and most of those are misdiagnosed by the homeowner (leak from a different source, condensation, etc.).
What’s NOT covered
Honesty matters. Here’s what the craftsmanship guarantee does not cover:
- Damage from outside causes — fallen trees, hail, lightning, ice dams from clogged gutters that we didn’t install. These are insurance issues, not workmanship issues.
- Failure of materials — covered by the manufacturer warranty, not us.
- Damage from neglect — gutters that haven’t been cleaned in 5 years, branches scraping the shingles, etc.
- Pre-existing problems on parts of the roof we didn’t work on — if you had us replace half the roof, we cover what we replaced.
- Aging beyond expected lifespan — at year 30+, asphalt shingles wear out. That’s not a craftsmanship issue.
For everything else, we come back.
The honest motivation
Some contractors offer big warranties as a marketing trick, hoping no one will ever try to use them. We offer ours because:
- We’re a family-owned local business — our reputation is everything. A few bad warranty stories on Google would crush us.
- We don’t want to spend our weekends fixing callbacks, so we install carefully the first time.
- Most of our work comes from referrals. Happy customers refer; angry ones don’t.
- If we charge a fair price for premium work, we have margin to fix the rare problem without losing money on the original job.
It’s not generosity. It’s a business model that aligns our incentives with the customer’s. If we do the work right, everybody wins.
